On a crisp, autumnal evening, we pulled in a merry crowd to take part in our annual fundraiser, This Is Not A Pub Quiz. We were kindly hosted by the Somerstown Coffee House and we also had heaps of prizes to give away, courtesy of Bill’s, Ohh Deer, Dominos, Kazvare Made It and Marine Ices. It’s fair to say that the stakes were pretty high.
What makes This Is Not A Pub Quiz special is that it’s a quiz where being able to recall lots of general knowledge will get you absolutely nowhere. All you really need is a team, a bag full of LOLs (a bit of money to bribe the judges) and a dollop of imagination.
Points are awarded for right answers and for creative, witty answers. Although many responses and rounds had us in stitches, we leave you with one example of the madness from the winning team’s contribution to the This Is Not Shakespeare round. Their task was to remix to Shakespeare’s prologue of Romeo & Juliet by filling in the designated blanks. Their piece is called Hameo and Piglet (and their additions are in bold):
Two piglets, both alike in dignity,
In fair Hamburg, where we lay our scene,
From ancient pigsties to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the pork loins of these two swine
A pair of meat-lovers take their bacon;
Whose misadventured piteous overthrows
Do with their gluttony bury their parents’ offal.
The fearful passage of their sausage love,
And the continuance of their parents’ rage,
Which, but their children’s end, nought could grill,
Is now the Fairtrade traffic of our stage;
The which if you with hunger attend,
What here shall burn, our toil shall strive to fry.

We are incredibly thankful to our sponsors and teams who made the night a huge success. The money we raised will be going to support the costs of some of our key programmes.
